Out in the Weeds
I don't know what's growing over at Marine Drive, but it's in bloom, and I'm allergic to it.
For those not from around here, Marine Drive is a stretch of highway that runs between the airport and a river. There's a paved area just for cyclists, joggers, and other folks out for recreation. On either side of the path is what looks like tall grass. It's a little more than that.
Today is my 'brisk' day, meaning I ride at about 75% of my maximum heart rate. I'm doing fine until, pow, my nose clamps shut and starts running, and I sneeze repeatedly. My eyes start itching and I rub them. Hands aren't clean. Now I have swelling eyes.
If that wasn't enough, my heart rate monitor started to go off and on. I guess the battery that came with it is about to expire. That's happened before with my first cycling computer. Still, I got in my miles and kept up a good pace. Sure got hungry. For a while I thought I might run out of energy and end up creeping home. Tough ride.

Do you take food with you? You should never feel thirsty or hungry while riding; if you do, you've waited too long to eat/drink. You don't need more than 40 carbs per half hour, so you can just take a bite every 5 minutes or so if you've got something like Fig Newtons or an energy bar. Home made ones are cheapest and taste better!

I got out of the habit of taking food. Since I've just got back to riding close to fifty miles on my long days, I must remember to do it. I didn't eat right that day either, so that made it worse.
Normally, I carry fig newtons and two bottles of Power Aid mixed with water. They don't exactly go together, but they get the job done.
