Doing it Right

I'm riding the Blackbird downtown heading to the East Bank Esplanade, there's a guy ahead of me on his bike wearing street clothes. No, make that office attire. We're heading toward the Fed-Ex near SW Market. A horn honks. I look back, a car is approaching. It gets near the guy ahead of me. The passenger asks, "Where is your helmet?" The guy on the bike says something like, "I left it at the office." I have to paraphrase, I didn't hear him clearly. I catch up to the car and tap on my helmet. The car pulls ahead and the passenger says to the cyclist, "Behind you is a good example."

The passenger in the car was Portland City Commissioner Sam Adams.

I hear enough from my motoring co-workers about the foils of cyclists, I can only imagine the volume of complaints Sam Adams gets on a single day. Every time we make a mistake, it's all you hear about. I'll stay on track and walk the line (ride the line?), I don't want the man's job to get any harder than it is.
